Help

Quick answers

Answers to common questions about starting comparisons, reviewing results, and choosing comparison options.

Basics

What can WhatChanged compare?

WhatChanged compares files, folders, and text on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. You can compare two files, two folders, supported text files, or pasted text in Direct Text Compare.

Read-only

Does it modify originals?

No. WhatChanged does not modify or delete your original files while it builds a comparison report.

Start

How do I start a comparison?

In the app, choose two files or two folders as the left and right sides. On iPhone and iPad, you can send exactly two files from Files through the share sheet. On Mac, you can compare in the app or start from Finder inside monitored folders.

Folders

What does a folder report show?

Folder reports organize added, removed, modified, and renamed items so the main change types are easier to review.

Text

Can I compare text?

Supported text files can be reviewed in unified or split diff views. Direct Text Compare lets you paste or type text on both sides without selecting files first.

Options

How can I reduce noise?

Use ignore rules for hidden items, extensions, names, and patterns. Text options can ignore line endings and whitespace-only changes, and optional SHA-256 can add content-level verification when needed.

Reports

Can I keep or share a result?

WhatChanged can keep recent comparisons and export or share reports for later review.

Contact support

What should I include when contacting support?

Include the WhatChanged app version, your device, OS version, comparison type, what happened, and steps to reproduce if possible.

Latest update

Version 1.50.0

Safe Merge

Safe Merge is the main update in WhatChanged 1.50.0. It turns a completed folder comparison into a guided copy step, so you can create a merged output folder without changing the folders you compared.

Preview

Preview before copying

Safe Merge starts after a completed folder comparison. Choose a destination, review the plan, then confirm before anything is copied.

Rules

Choose a merge rule

Pick Newest, Oldest, Smallest (New), Smallest (Old), Biggest (New), or Biggest (Old) when both folders contain changed versions of the same item.

Output

New output folder

WhatChanged copies the selected results into a new output folder, preserving the folder structure needed for those copied files.

Originals

Originals stay unchanged

The compared folders are not edited, deleted, moved, renamed, replaced, or overwritten. After a successful merge, WhatChanged can include a README with merge details.
  • Direct Text Compare moved to its own Text tab.
  • Settings now includes a link to the official WhatChanged website.
  • Reference builds: iOS/iPadOS build 5; macOS build 7.

If Safe Merge is blocked, choose a destination outside the compared folders and make sure the output folder does not already exist. If you still need help, include the app version, platform, selected rule, and what appeared in the preview when you contact support.

Version 1.35 Recents for saved comparisons Recents became easier to use for saved comparison jobs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
  • On Mac, completed file and folder comparisons are saved in Recents, so past comparisons can be reopened and rerun more easily.
  • Important comparisons can use custom names and pinned positions, making repeated jobs easier to find.
  • Recents management was refined with cleaner layouts, clearer pinned indicators, and more focused selection and removal.
Version 1.3 Direct Text Compare Direct Text Compare made text comparison available without selecting files first.
  • Paste or type text on both sides and compare instantly.
  • Diff views match side-by-side changes more clearly, with inline highlights for edited words.
  • On iPhone and iPad, text compare also gained improved keyboard handling, better visibility while typing, and refreshed language labels after language changes.
